Doe-Anderson, 360 Make Duck Head Finals
ATLANTA–Duck Head Apparel has reduced to two the number of agencies pitching its $900,000 advertising account, said sources. 360, based in Atlanta, and Doe-Anderson of Louisville, Ky., reportedly delivered a second round of presentations to the Monroe, Ga.-headquartered clothier last week. Eliminated from final considerations were Hanson Dodge in Milwaukee and Austin Kelley in Atlanta. The Buntin Group of Nashville, Tenn., declined to defend. Officials with the client are expected to make a decision between the two finalists this week.
Miller Oil Recruits Mumford Marketing
ATLANTA–Mumford Marketing in Richmond, Va., has been hired by Miller Oil to develop a comprehensive marketing plan for the Norfolk, Va., company’s 96 retail gas outlets and 63 convenience stores. Billings are expected to reach between $500,000-750,000 before the end of the year. Miller, which has a significant presence in the Hampton Roads, Va., market, is attempting to establish a foothold in Central Virginia.
PRSA Honors Matlock’s Cancer Campaign
ATLANTA–Matlock & Associates, a multicultural advertising and public relations agency here, won a Silver Anvil award from the Public Relations Society of America for its “Tell-a-friend” breast cancer awareness campaign for the American Cancer Society. Matlock’s series was the lone African American campaign to win the award.
Arnold’s VW Advertising Rates Top Obie
NEW YORK–The Outdoor Advertising Association of America awarded the 1999 Obie Best of Show and a $50,000 prize to Boston’s Arnold Communications for its Volkswagen Beetle work. Executions in the winning campaign read: “0 to 60? Yes,” “Comes with wonderful new features . . . like heat,” “Suddenly, the world’s glass is half full again” and “Hug it? Drive it?” Other Obie winners: Colby Effler & Partners, Santa Monica, Calif., for California Pizza Kitchen; TBWA/Chiat/Day, Playa del Rey, Calif., for ABC Television; Leo Burnett & Co., Chicago, for Hallmark; Peterson Milla Hooks, Minneapolis, for United Way; Cliff Freeman and Partners, New York, for Sauza Tequila; and The Smith Agency, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for Anonymous (“God” billboards). Budweiser was also inducted into the Obie Hall of Fame, joining the likes of Levi Strauss & Co., Burma Shave and Volkswagen.
Iams Co. in Play After Split With Doner
DETROIT–The Iams Co. is gearing up a review to find a new advertising partner for its $15 million account following a split with longtime agency Doner. The 12-year relationship disintegrated due to differences in opinion between the Southfield, Mich., agency and the Dayton, Ohio, company over the strategic direction of the account, according to Alan Kalter, Doner chairman and chief executive officer.
