GGT Chief Hears Grievances at Wells
NEW YORK–Michael Greenlees, chief executive of Wells BDDP parent GGT Group, visited the New York shop last week to meet “managing partners who were upset” over the recent departure of agency president Paula Forman. The unscheduled meetings were held to placate more than a dozen Wells staffers, including key members of the Procter & Gamble account team. Greenlees, who characterized the mood of the meetings as “cooperative,” denied speculation that certain Wells staffers threatened to quit or demanded either the ousting of Wells chief executive Frank Assumma or the reinstatement of Forman. Assumma did not return calls.
Bates Wins Rezulin Account
NEW YORK–Bates USA here has been awarded the $15 million direct-to-consumer ad account for the diabetes drug Rezulin from Parke-Davis, sources said. Parke-Davis is the Morris Plains, N.J.-based pharmaceutical division of Warner-Lambert. Bates won the assignment after a shootout with fellow W-L roster shop J. Walter Thompson here. Bates referred calls to the client, which declined comment.
Nordstrom Casts Wide Net for Agencies
NEW YORK–Nordstrom has contacted a long list of shops via consultant Select Resources International in Los Angeles. Agencies contacted by the Seattle-based retailer include: Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners, New York; Arnold Advertising, Boston; Fallon McElligott, Minneapolis; McCann-Erickson, Suissa Miller and Dailey & Associates, all Los Angeles; Team One Advertising, El Segundo, Calif.; TBWA Chiat/Day, Venice, Calif.; Hal Riney & Partners and Citron Haligman Bedecarrƒ, both San Francisco; and Bates USA, New York and Irvine, Calif. Arnold and Kirshenbaum have declined to participate. Executives at the agencies, Nordstrom and SRI declined comment.
Deutsch Lands Hilfiger Super Bowl Project
NEW YORK–Deutsch here has won a project to create a Super Bowl TV spot for Tommy Hilfiger in New York as the review for the client’s $30 million account reaches its final phases, said sources. The 30-second spot will introduce the Hilfiger athletics line. Incumbent Toth Design & Advertising, Concord, Mass., has been eliminated from the review while contender Cliff Freeman and Partners, New York, is considering withdrawing from the contest, sources said. Executives at the agencies and client either declined comment or could not be reached.
Temerlin, CME Vie for Nationwide
CHICAGO–Nationwide Insurance has narrowed its search for a new agency to handle its $22 million account to Temerlin McClain in Irving, Texas, and Campbell Mithun Esty in Minneapolis, sources said. Eliminated were semifinalists Cramer-Krasselt, Chicago; HMS Partners, Columbus, Ohio; and D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles and Partners & Shevack, both New York, sources said. Ketchum Advertising, Pittsburgh, is the incumbent.
