Firestone Brand Takes Another Hit

NEW YORK–Firestone may be on the verge of its second major tire recall in a year. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reportedly has ordered the tire manufacturer to launch another recall and is giving the company until Friday to respond.

Company spokeswoman Jill Bratina confirmed officials are holding talks with NHTSA, but had not been given a date for a decision on a recall or when one would be made. “Certainly our position is unchanged that our tires our safe,” she said.

Firestone announced a voluntary recall of 6.5 million tires in August 2000. Neither the federal agency nor Firestone has revealed the extent of a new episode.
