DuPont Begins ‘Reassessment’ of Shops, Sends RFIs

NEW YORK DuPont has sent out request for information forms to both roster and non-roster agencies in what sources described as an “agency reassessment” by the Wilmington, Del.-based client.

The E.I. du Pont Nemours and Company, as the client is officially known, recently consolidated its eight business units into six, and sources said the client wants to realign the global advertising duties, both creative and media, in a way that is more cost-efficient.

The company spent about $70 million in U.S. media from January to November of 2002, per CMR.

McCann-Erickson handles the company’s corporate-image account globally as well as its Lycra brand. BBDO handles the line of Stainmaster brands. Sources said that both of those agencies and other roster and non-roster shops received the RFI document earlier this week.

Other recipients include Young & Rubicam, Saatchi & Saatchi, Grey, Ogilvy & Mather, DDB, Foote, Cone & Belding, Fallon and a number of smaller shops, sources said. WPP’s Mediaedge:cia is on du Pont’s media roster.

The RFIs are due back late next week with RFPs expected to go out to a shortened list of shops later this month, sources said.

Kathy Ellis, who works in the client’s purchasing department, is managing the initial stage of this process, sources said. No consultant is yet involved.

Neither she nor a corporate representative could immediately be reached for comment.
