Doritos Pepsi Max “Feed the Flock”

The most talked about entry in the Doritos/Pepsi Max “Crash the Super Bowl” contest so far this year is a spot that didn’t even make it to the finals. The controversial commercial, which is being criticized by Catholics for making fun of the Holy Eucharist, has already racked up more than 100, 000 views on YouTube. The minute-long execution, titled “Feed Your Flock,” shows a priest attempting to grow his congregation by offering free chips and soda at church. The actor who plays the pastor, Michael Lyons, came up with the idea, and says that people “misconstrued the content.”  The pastor, he argues, doesn’t actually consecrate the PepsiCo products, “therefore it is not the Eucharist.” And a shot of a sign outside the church does state “Free Doritos and Pepsi Max Sunday.” Still, it’s hard to believe that wasn’t the intended suggestion when you have people line up to the front of a church in order to receive snacks from the priest. The spot was cut from the contest and won’t make it to the big game, but the team at Media Wave Video Productions still wins big with all the attention the ad is getting. Doubt any corporate video or event film the company’s produced has ever garnered this kind of talk value.–Eleftheria Parpis
