Doner, Retailer Part on $135 Mil. Account

CHICAGO Circuit City and independent Doner have parted ways on the retailer’s $135 million broadcast creative account, according to agency CEO Alan Kalter.

The split comes just days after Philip Schoonover took over as chief executive officer of the Richmond, Va., company. Schoonover, a former Best Buy executive, was tapped to succeed Alan McCollough in the position last December, with a March 1 effective date.

Last May, Fiona Dias, who had been working at company’s Circuit City Direct subsidiary, was named chief marketing officer, replacing Ernest Speranze, who had left the company. Dias was named an executive vice president of the company on March 1 as well.

Kalter said the company wanted to move from an ongoing relationship to one that was project based. A client representative said she would not comment on “rumor or speculation.”

Doner, based in Southfield, Mich., won the broadcast creative account in June 2004 after a review conducted by consultant Hasan + Co. It was unclear whether there would be a new review.

Doner’s work for Circuit City has used the Cars’ hit, “Just What I Needed,” as an anthem and a tagline.

Circuit City spent nearly $135 million on broadcast ads and just over $180 million on all advertising last year, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus.
