Davidandgoliath Names CDs

LOS ANGELES Copywriter Ben Purcell and art director Simon Tuplin, associate creative directors recently teamed on the Kia Motors America account, said they have been promoted to creative directors at independent davidandgoliath.

“We don’t see our role changing,” said Purcell, “other than we will be mentoring some of the other creatives. [Chairman and CCO] David [Angelo] wants us to work on accounts, still continue to lead by example. We want to help the agency.”

Purcell said he sees the Los Angeles agency as “preparing for a rebirth of sorts, with Kia as the focus.” Tuplin added that “as a smaller shop, you can always go for the meatier smaller accounts” that come open. “We have some talented creatives here.”

Purcell, 35, joined the agency in 2000 from then Colby, Effler & Partners, where he worked on the Beverly Center and California Avocado Commission accounts. At davidandgoliath, Purcell worked on Universal Studios Orlando, LA Gear, Bacardi Flavors, Mattel and Kia. As a freelancer before his Colby years, he worked on Hardee’s at Band of Gypsies, ABC and Apple at Omnicom Group’s TBWA\Chiat\Day, on Yonex Golf at Publicis Groupe’s Team One and on Microsoft at independent Wieden + Kennedy.

Tuplin, 37, joined the shop in the spring of 2005 on the pitch team that won Travel Channel via the “Written word” print campaign. Since then, he has worked on the Kia “Save the greenbacks” campaign and on LA Gear. Previously, Tuplin was as an associate creative director in Toronto at what became Lowe Roche, on brands such as Virgin Mobile, Mercedes and Coca-Cola. Before that, he was at Bozell Palmer Bonner as an art director on Budweiser, Taco Bell and Labatt Breweries.
