Cordiant Taps Execs to Lead Bates Group

NEW YORK — Cordiant Communications Group has named three regional CEOs to head up Bates Group, an entity recently formed by the combination of four units belonging to the British holding company. Earlier this month, CCG announced its plans to unite advertising unit Bates, marketing-services network 141, branding and design group Fitch and specialist network Healthworld under one profit-and-loss center.

In the Americas, Steve Girgenti, worldwide CEO of Healthworld, adds the additional title of CEO for Bates Group. Ian Smith, CEO of Bates Asia Pacific, takes on the role of CEO of Bates Group in Asia and the Pacific Rim and Toby Hoare, CEO of Bates Europe, adds the post of CEO of Bates Group in Europe. The regional operating team is expected to coordinate efforts between the individual agencies.

Under the new structure, the leaders of the respective units will retain their respective jobs. Fitch worldwide CEO Paul Stead will keep his post, as will 141 worldwide CEO Colin Hearn. In addition to his new role, Girgenti will continue to run Healthworld.

Currently, David Hearn is worldwide CEO of Bates, but is due to succeed CCG CEO Michael Bungey in March. Once Hearn takes on the CCG job, he could retain his Bates worldwide post or name someone else to it, sources said. Meanwhile, the search for a Bates North American CEO is still underway. Whoever takes that post is a likely candidate for the Bates worldwide CEO job, if Hearn were to relinquish it, sources said.
