ConocoPhillips has selected Boston’s Digitas to handle a digital creative assignment for the oil company, sources said.

The selection came after a review in which there were two other finalists, identified by sources as WPP Group’s VML in Kansas City and Hearst’s iCrossing in Dallas.

The Publicis Groupe shop is tasked with re-designing ConocoPhillips’ corporate Web site, said sources. Revenue on the account, which is new, could not be determined.

Roth Associates in Playa del Rey, Calif., is said to have managed the search. Roth, which also handled previous media and general-market creative reviews for ConocoPhillips, did not return calls. The Houston-based client could not immediately be reached.

ConocoPhillips’ lead creative agency is independent Venables Bell & Partners in San Francisco and its lead media agency is independent KSL in Los Angeles. Venables Bell landed its business last year.

The company’s major media spending totaled $12 million last year and $6 million in the first seven months of 2010, according to Nielsen. Those figures don’t include online spending.
