Colby Puts Weber in Charge of Suzuki

LOS ANGELES Automotive veteran Dave Weber has joined Dentsu’s Colby & Partners as executive vice president and general manager, charged with leading all advertising efforts for American Suzuki Motor Corp., the client said.

Weber, who has 25 years of experience in the car industry, was most recently an automotive marketing consultant for American Suzuki through DHW Consulting in Manhattan Beach, Calif. Prior to that, he was vice president of marketing at Hyundai Motor America, where he led the company’s advertising, public relations, Internet and database marketing, promotions and events, incentive programs and product development departments and initiatives. He departed Hyundai in August 2002, after the automaker dismissed the now-defunct Bates USA West in Irvine, Calif., and tapped The Richards Group in Dallas.

In his new role, Weber will lead the strategic direction of Suzuki’s national, regional and local advertising efforts. He will be based in Colby’s Brea, Calif., office, and will liaison between Suzuki’s national office in Brea, Suzuki’s U.S. dealers and Colby, developing long-term marketing communications strategies, as well as coordinating and supporting the activities in the regions. Santa Monica, Calif.-based Colby has been expanding the Brea office after adding additional Suzuki dealer business several months ago.

Suzuki spent $63 million on ads in 2003, according to TNS Media Intelligence/CMR.

“David played a key role in the recent development of our aggressive regional marketing approach and overall marketing platform,” said Koichi Suzuki, president of automotive operations for American Suzuki, in a statement. “As ASMC continues to grow, we will look to David for his insight and experience.”

Weber could not immediately be reached.

During his career, Weber also has supervised agency automotive advertising accounts for Mazda, Mitsubishi, Chrysler, Isuzu and Nissan.
