They may not be reading deathless literature, but Americans haven’t entirely turned their backs on books. A recent Gallup poll asked adults, “Do you happen to be reading any books or novels at present?” Nearly half (47 percent) said they are. The figure is far higher than in a 1990 Gallup poll (37 percent) and more than double what it was in several surveys in the 1950s.
