CHD Hires Duo To Run Creative

A decade after the two former classmates teamed up at The Portfolio Center, Cally Bybee and Mary Patton Sage are back together —this time in charge of their own creative department.

The longtime friends last week were named co-creative directors at Cole Henderson Drake, a full- service independent in Atlanta that claims $30 million in billings. They replace Chris Jacobs, who left in January after four years for an as-yet-unspecified senior creative position at Interpublic Group’s The Martin Agency in Richmond, Va.

Sage had been freelancing for the shop and was offered Jacobs’ job first, said chairman John Drake, to whom the duo reports. She suggested teaming up with Bybee to run the six-person creative unit. “[Sage’s] vision … was it should be a co-creative position,” said Drake.

“We complement each other,” said Sage. Added Bybee, “I’m probably more of an analyzer, and she’s probably more of a ‘trier’ with really smart reasons behind it.”

Sage, 31, freelanced for nearly three years following a stint as an art director at Publicis Groupe’s Fallon in Minneapolis, where she worked on accounts such as Timex, United Airlines and Holiday Inn. Bybee, 33, was one of 23 creative group heads at The Richards Group in Dallas. The copywriter worked on the Giant Eagle, BVD underwear and Expo Design Center accounts, among others.

CHD’s clients include Delta Apparel and Wendy’s International.
