BBDO in N.Y. Makes Staff Cut

NEW YORK BBDO here has laid off 20 staffers or about 3 percent of its New York workforce, sources said.

The shop has about 650 staffers. An agency representative confirmed that some employees were let go this week but declined to provide specifics.

“Staff reductions have been made as a result of changes going on in the industry and the increased demand of clients,” the rep said. “As a result, we’ve moved some people around and eliminated some positions in order to operate more efficiently and effectively.”

The reductions were across disciplines at the shop and the rep added that the agency reevaluates its staff and operations at the start of each year.

“These reductions were limited to the New York office,” he said.

An internal memo from BBDO New York CEO John Osborn was sent to agency staffers today but did not contain numbers.

“We were forced to say goodbye to some very close friends and colleagues,” Osborn wrote. “Staffing reductions are never easy, and certainly never popular. Rest assured, we’re poised, ready and optimistic about what lies ahead. Here’s to tomorrow and thanks for your understanding.”

Key clients of Omnicom Group-owned BBDO includes AT&T, Bank of America, FedEx, Frito-Lay and PepsiCo.
