AFG Adds Miller to Lead Client Services

NEW YORK Gabriel Miller has joined Interpublic Group’s Avrett Free Ginsberg as director of client services, a new post that marks the first time the agency has organized its account executives within a department.

Prior to Miller’s appointment, the New York agency’s account executives were organized within category silos, said chairman Frank Ginsberg, such as the luxury or the packaged-goods units. In his new post, Miller, 33, will facilitate communication among account executives as well as define the agency’s new philosophy, dubbed “Brand Soul Searching.”

“We want to uncover the deeper idea that the brand stands for,” said Miller. “When the customer believes in that idea, they’re going to be more willing to pursue the brand and for a longer period of time.”

Miller pointed to the agency’s work for Wolverine work boots, a brand the agency is marketing to the blue-collar construction crowd. “It’s a badge of honor that says, ‘I’m proud to go to work. I get my boots dirty and I’m proud of it.’ “

Miller, whose first day was Monday, was most recently at Roberts & Tarlow’s Los Angeles office as account director, leading the Neutrogena business. He also led the Nestle-Purina account at IPG’s McCann Erickson in Los Angeles, during which time he first met Ginsberg. AFG also handles Nestle Purina business.

Ginsberg said he hopes Miller would bring “a new spark and a new inspiration,” to the agency, which will focus on teamwork rather than individual achievement. “I’m the guy that owns the Yankees and I’ve got a Derek Jeter and I’ve got an A-Rod and I’m putting the best team together to take the agency into the next generation.”
