WASHINGTON The U.S. Supreme Court should overturn a California Supreme Court ruling that the public statements Nike made about its overseas labor practices were commercial speech and therefore subject to false and deceptive advertising claims, three advertising associations argue in a brief filed with the court.

The Association of National Advertisers, the American Advertising Federation and the American Association of Advertising Agencies allege that the California decision makes all companies vulnerable to false advertising claims whenever they respond to issues of public debate.
