$60 Mil. Payless Business Goes Into Play

CHICAGO Payless ShoeSource today said it is reviewing creative duties on its North American ad account, currently at independent Barkley Evergreen & Partners in Kansas City, Mo.

The client in Topeka, Kan., which spends about $60 million annually on ads, has enlisted consultant Joanne Davis in New York to handle the search, which is scheduled to be concluded in time for the winning agency to launch a fall campaign.

Barkley is not going to defend the business, according to an agency official. The shop will continue to work for the client for the next 90 days, the official said.

Only creative chores are in play. Other duties, such as media buying, Hispanic, public relations and international assignments, are not up for grabs.
