13 Profess Love for N.Y.

The Empire State Development Corp. has received 13 questionnaire responses from shops in the state-mandated review of its $8 million “I Love New York” tourism account.
Creative incumbent Toolbox is defending against fellow New York shops Admerasia, Brouillard Communications, Citigate Albert Frank, CMG Communications, D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, Elser & Aucone, Grey Advertising, McCaffery Ratner Gottlieb & Lane, Moss/Dragoti and Partners & Shevack/Wolf, as well as Eric Mower and Associates, Albany, and Smith Advertising Group, Syracuse. Media First, the New York-based media incumbent, said it is pitching with one of those creative shops, but declined to name the agency.
The list was confirmed by a representative of the Albany-based state agency. By law, contracts expire March 31. Media Logic, Albany, handles interactive duties and will not defend. Oberlander in Albany has direct marketing; it was unclear at press time if the agency was pitching with another shop.
The client previously maintained a roster of agencies which competed for each assignment through the year. The ESDC now hopes to consolidate the business at one shop.
The list will be trimmed in early February with shops getting creative assignments. Five will make the finals. The two-year pact will have three optional one-year extensions.
Recent Toolbox spots consist of scenes from New York destinations. In each, a character says: “What do you expect? This is New York.”
