Americans may have an emotional attachment to their cars, but this doesn’t mean they have an emotional attachment to U.S. automakers. Gallup polling conducted in mid-November found fewer than half its respondents (47 percent) saying they would favor the federal government “giving major financial assistance to the Big Three U.S. automotive companies if they are close to going broke or declaring bankruptcy.” Among those opposed, just 18 percent would change their minds if one or more of the Big Three was “certain to fail” in the absence of such aid.
