NEW YORK Taxi’s office here has hired John Berg as president and James Fox as planning director. Both posts are new at the independent shop.

Berg will work closely with Paul Lavoie, Taxi’s chairman and chief creative officer, who leads the Toronto-based agency and orchestrated its U.S. entry in late 2004.

Berg, 43, comes to Taxi from Bulldog in New York, a communications company that he helped start two years ago. Prior to that, Berg served as New York president of Euro RSCG. He began his career at DDB and also worked 12 years at BBDO, where he rose to the position of evp and group director on major accounts such as Pizza Hut and Dell.

“What impressed us the most about John’s career is that it’s always been marked by growth,” said Lavoie, who will remain based in Taxi’s New York office, along with co-founder Jane Hope, the shop’s design cd. “He has consistently grown both the agencies he’s led and the brands he’s managed, and that’s a rare achievement in this industry.”

“There’s always been a role for agencies that can act boldly and without fear,” Berg said, in a statement. “Many clients, even historically conservative ones, are realizing that the conventional is losing its ability to achieve breakthrough results.”

Fox, 31, joins from the New York office of Bartle Bogle Hegarty, where he was group planning director on British Airways and Levi’s.

Taxi’s client assignments in New York include Amp’d Mobile, Rail Europe Group and Blue Shield of California. Canadian assignments include Nike, BMW Mini and Pfizer’s Viagra.
