Starburst Gets Weirder

You receive a brief to introduce Starburst’s new Baja California flavor, so what do you do? If you’re TBWA\Chiat\Day group creative directors Ian Reichenthal and Scott Vitrone, overseen by ecd Gerry Graf, and you’re trying to catch fickle teens’ eyes, the answer is, first, to enlist Hungry Man’s Bryan Buckley to direct. Then write an ad that turns the phrase, “It’s like a fiesta in my mouth,” into a terrifying spectacle of a mariachi band being crushed by teeth as fruit juice rushes in the giant mouth in which they’re standing. The surreal ad was filmed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in order to get genuine faces for the mariachi players. The hardest part was the flood of 7,000 liters of “fruit juice”— actually water—pumped into the sound stage for each take, which they did about four times. “We had to get everybody dry and do wardrobe each time,” Reichenthal says. The ad breaks today.

CP+B Wins Big at Kellys

Crispin Porter + Bogusky took home the top prize in all three of the Magazine Publishers of America Kelly Awards on Thursday in New York. The Miami shop won the $100,000 grand prize for their Molson “Tools” campaign, offering help to men trying to pick up women in bars. Molson’s “Fake covers,” featuring pseudo magazine covers, won the gold Kelly award. The silver Kelly went to the Mini “Inserts” campaign. The Kelly awards honor magazine campaigns that excel creatively.

Rubberband Man Makes Sitcom

The Rubberband Man is unstoppable. Following his popular Office Max commercials via DDB in Chicago, actor Eddie Steeples became a bit of a cult phenomenon, being named one of People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People. He barely escaped last year’s killer tsunami in Thailand, leaving the area just before it hit. Now Steeples has hit the big time and will star in a new NBC show, My Name is Earl, beginning this fall.
