Barry Manilow Headlines A Capitol Fourth's 35th Anniversary Event
The 239th for the country, the 35th for PBS.
There’s really nothing like celebrating the Fourth of July in the capital, seeing fireworks set off against the iconic silhouettes of the Capitol Building and the Washington Monument. This Independence Day will mark the 35th year PBS broadcast A Capitol Fourth has been doing its part to light up the sky and put on a show for the DC flag-waving crowds.
Singer Barry Manilow will open and close this year, ending, appropriately enough, with a patriotic medley. The performances, which will air live from the Capitol Building’s west lawn, include a mix of styles from KC and the Sunshine Band to the National Symphony Orchestra, as well as a Robert Davi-led tribute to Frank Sinatra.
As per usual, a live-cannon-fire rendition of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture will put a final exclamation point on the broadcast.
A Capitol Fourth will air on PBS and NPR Saturday, July 4 from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m.
