12pm – Marvin – U St. Corridor
Matt: We’d never met in person but had added each other as friends on Facebook when we got the news. I wasn’t sure she would recognize me in my ‘ironic’ glasses. I wore them in honor of our new blogging gigs and meeting locale. In typical fashion, I arrived a little late. Luckily, she was sitting in a barstool with her eye on the door.
Christine: I couldn’t help but think to myself Patrick W. Gavin would never be late for such an appointment as I waited, perched on a barstool for Mystery Matt. But all annoyance melted away as a scruff man donning a hat and ironic glasses walked in the door. He was carrying a notebook and had the look of a man who had been inundated with Facebook requests and Twitters since our mid-Friday afternoon announcement.
Matt: Her phone voice and pictures led me to believe that she was spunky. That, she is. Christine went one-to-one with me on midday mimosas. She met my chicken and waffle entree with an omelet and waffle of her own and without hesitation, pulled a waitress aside to snap our photo for this post.
You can tell she’s just as comfortable being cute as she is being cut-throat. I like that in co-editor.
Christine: I knew we’d get along swimmingly once the waitress asked us for our drink orders and Matt replied, “I’m drinking.” Mimosas it was.
From there, new ideas for the blog flowed as freely as Marvin’s champagne. We played the name game and traded invites to parties and events. We bonded over the unique humiliation in being named past FishbowlDC hot media types and agreed something about that contest would have to change.
Matt: We discussed new features and ideas for FishbowlDC, the many lunch invitations that had come our way over the past few days, our goals for the blog and fears about filling the void left by Patrick. I was totally comfortable and felt like she shared my appreciation for transparency.
Christine: Since it was our first real meeting, I was definitely nervous Matt and I would have two completely different visions for Fishbowl, but we were immediately on the same page. It was as if the blog gods has smiled down upon us.
Matt: Even though we’re more ‘Seth and Amy’ than ‘Woodward and Bernstein,’ I’d give our new relationship a “5” out of 5. I don’t foresee any Pulitzers, but we’re sure as hell going to have some fun in the Fishbowl.
Christine: He texted mere minutes after brunch to say what a good time he had. Definitely give it a “5”out of 5.
UPDATE: Matt and Christine have exchanged numerous texts, emails and calls in the 12 hours since Sunday brunch. They are now in a committed relationship and reside in a fishbowl on the blogosphere.
