Henderson To Cover Personal Finance

Below is a Washington Post internal memo obtained by FishbowlDC:

Almost daily we hear from readers who want advice for investing and saving their money. Baby boomers in particular seem baffled by the endless array of plans to help them save for college, retirement, health problems, child care – you name it. They watch the China boom and wonder about investing there, see the rush to develop resort properties and wonder how to assess that. We needed someone with a deep knowledge of financial markets, an engaging writing style, someone who can shine on radio, podcasts and video and someone who can help us design our web strategy. Naturally we went after Nell Henderson. Who else? Luckily she was delighted.

Nell came to the Post in 1984 and has seemingly done it all – covering biotech, transportation, the District finances, and the O.J. Simpson trial. She was an editor on Metro and Financial before covering the Fed for the past three and a half years, where her accuracy in predicting what the Fed would do helped distinguish our coverage of Greenspan and Bernanke.

She was born in Texas, grew up in L.A, graduated from Harvard, and earned a diploma in economics at the London School of Economics. She taught journalism in Peru and Bolivia on a Fulbright fellowship. She started journalism as an overnight cop reporter for a wire service in L.A, worked as an assistant business writer in The New York Times’ L.A. bureau, and covered local government for the Santa Monica Evening Outlook and the Los Angeles Times.

Nell will start her new job when we have found her replacement. She already is bursting with ideas (including the Nell Henderson Personal Finance show.)
