Reagan had been a fan of the miniature jelly beans since 1967, when the company began sending cases of them to the first-term California governor to help him quit smoking. Few public figures have so single-handedly boosted a brand. Sales of Jelly Bellys tripled in 1980 and 1981, when the national press caught on to Reagan’s fondness for them.
