ABC's John Cochran On R.W. Apple

R. W. “Johnny” Apple was a big man. In every sense of the word. Leading off the eulogies at his memorial service Tuesday in Washington, Todd Purdum, one of his former colleagues on the New York Times, noted that over the years Johnny had gone from 185 pounds to 285 pounds. And then, as thoracic cancer took its toll, back down to 185 at the end.

A big man deserves a big sendoff. And Johnny got just that. Although he died two months ago, it has taken that long for all the preparations: booking the Eisenhower Theatre at the Kennedy Center, arranging an epicurean lunch at the rooftop restaurant after the service.
