From The Washington Post: We are pleased to announce that Phil Rucker and Sandhya Somashekhar, who are both completing their second consecutive summer internships, will stay on as two-year reporting interns in Metro. Phil will be based in Southern Maryland, where he has worked this summer, and will continue to cover Charles County government. He has pitched in on a lot of politics and breaking news, including the death of two teenage boys, who died during June's flooding in Frederick. Last year, he interned in our Prince George's bureau. He graduated in May from Yale University, where he was news editor of the student daily and served as a New Haven-based freelance reporter for The New York Times. Prior to his Post internship, Phil interned with The Times-Picayune in New Orleans. Phil grew up in San Diego, California and Savannah, Georgia. Sandhya will be based in Loudoun, where she also has worked this summer, and will continue as a general assignment reporter. She recently broke the news that developers were willing to pay Warrenton $22 million to build a subdivision, a story that led to the deal being rescinded. She also did an eye-opening feature about gold prospecting in Fauquier County. Sandhya interned in Fairfax last summer. In May, she received a masters in journalism from the University of California at Berkeley. Her undergraduate degree is from the University of Maryland in College Park. She grew up in Bel Air, Maryland, and Battle Creek, Michigan. Please join us in welcoming these two talented, promising young journalists to our staff. And: We are pleased to announce that Michael Alison Chandler is our new schools reporter in Loudoun. Previously, Michael had been a general assignment reporter in the bureau. Michael started at The Post in 2005 as a summer intern, and she was invited to stay on as a two-year intern. In more than a year at The Post, Michael has written a number of memorable stories, such as her touching piece about homeless people landing at Dulles International Airport with nowhere to go. She's also written several strong features about interaction between generations. Michael is enthusiastic about covering schools in Loudoun, where rapid growth is straining the educational system. We look forward to seeing her master this important beat.
