Three Dress Code Tips As Buckingham Palace Issues Reporter Guidelines

Buckingham Palace has issued a dress code regarding the British royals' upcoming visit to the U.S. Their guidelines state: "Smart attire for men includes the wearing of a jacket and tie, and for women a trouser or skirt suit. Those wearing jeans or trainers will not be admitted and casually dressed members of the media will be turned away. This also applies to technicians." While our first reaction relates to the requirement for technicians (really?), we need to respect their wishes. And we're writing as if we're actually interviewing Will and Kate? Ha. Really, when it comes to dress codes there are a few things to keep in mind. 1. Always look polished. We've attended many press junkets wearing jeans and hoodies but they let's face it -- they were nice jeans. And freshly cleaned hoodies. Seriously. We know how out of place it would be to wear a suit to one of the roundtables on a Saturday so the key is dressing for the occasion while looking polished. When we worked in HR, there were certainly casual Fridays when workers sported jeans and casual tops. They looked more put together than peers on a regular day wearing typical work attire. Even when you're wearing jeans, always look clean and polished. 2. Dress for the occasion. The palace's guidelines are certainly a reminder for the audience. Dress the part even if it means you'll be on your feet for hours. So, let's say you normally wear khakis and loafers and your client is coming to town. Plus, you're taking them out to dinner. We know you already know this but it's definitely a reason to dress up. Know your audience and dress for the occasion. 3. When in doubt, go formal. Sure, a technician isn't exactly going to opt a tux when covering a red carpet even though talent will look fancy. If there's ever a doubt in terms of what to wear for tricky situations, opt to be more formal and conservative. The same holds true for a job interview. If you're interviewing at a boutique marketing firm that's definitely on board with jeans, guess what? You should still sport a suit during a job interview. They will be impressed by your professionalism. If you dress down the first time you meet your potential boss, what type of impression are you making? You can always wear your favorite denim after you land the job. As far as we can tell, no one ever got rejected during a job interview because they were overdressed.
