Before Oprah was, well, Oprah, she was a news anchor in Baltimore.

She spoke to the Baltimore Sun about her seven years working at WJZ. She co-anchored the 6 p.m. newscast and the station promoted her arrival with commercials asking people on the street, “What is an Oprah?”

“And [on-camera] people would say things like, ‘I don’t know. Did you say Opree? Did you say Opry? Did you say Opra? Did you say Opera?’
