Revolving Door: Philippe de Montebello, Paula Zahn Take Over WNET's SundayArts

A ha! We knew there was something sneaky about that Philippe de Montebello. After announcing that he was leaving the Met, we could believe that he was planning to take up teaching at NYU, but we didn’t think for a second that he didn’t have more tricks up his soon-to-be-“retired” sleeves. So it is, as you may have caught de Montebello on your TV screens yesterday when he began his co-hosting duties on WNET‘s SundayArts program (also with Paula Zahn no less). Here’s a bit from the NY Times about what his role will be on the show:

At the outset Mr. de Montebello will introduce “SundayArts” content “a la ‘Masterpiece Theater,'” as he put it, by offering a bit of an overview. But eventually he hopes to develop programming and offer his own opinions.

“For the moment I’m a pretty voice,” he said wryly. “After that, we’ll see.”

And it’s worth reading this note about the new hosts from Neal Shapiro, the head of WNET who also served as host of the show before firing himself to get out of the way for Zahn and de Montebello.
