Gehry Gets Into the Lucrative World of Playground Design

Likely someplace he won’t want to wear his new t-shirt, the AP is reporting that Frank Gehry has been pegged to create his very first playground in Battery Park in Manhattan. It was announced late last night during a benefit hosted to raise money for the Battery Conservancy. And money, they’ll need, as the park is expected to cost about $4 million. For that price, we’re guessing that it’ll probably be better than the one we used to play on in the park across the street. Here what Mayor Bloomberg said last night about it and a couple of the details:

“We look forward to his brilliant addition to our world-class city,” Bloomberg said of Gehry’s playground design, which is expected to be unveiled later this year and will cost about $4 million. The funds will be raised by the conservancy, which was formed to rebuild and revitalize the Battery and Castle Clinton National Monument.

The prize-winning, Los Angeles-based designer will create a one-acre play space that will feature a “green” comfort station with a green roof and vegetal walls.
