WSTRNCV Magazine Launches Online

Malibu has a new online magazine: WSTRNCV, pronounced “western-siv.” The first issue of 2011 launched today after a less-than-successful attempt to get the mag going last year. WSTRNCV‘s founders are now calling their previous attempt a “demo issue.”

Looks like they got their shit together since then. The layouts are cool and they managed to fill 155 pages. The mag has a beachy feel, mostly centered around surfing and fashion. According to the press release, “our focus will be trained on boards & wheels, whether it’s surf, skate, snow, custom cars, vintage motorcycles, single-gear bikes & the people who love them.” That apparently includes KCRW‘s DJ Vidalia, who’s profiled in the issue.

We spoke with WSTRNCV founder Kiino Villand about the launch.

“We’re planning on ramping up relatively slowly. We’ll be coming out quarterly for now unless we encounter an unexpected onslaught of advertising/sponsorship. Emphasis on unexpected.”

Villand told us the mag is looking for writers, but the work will have to be pro-bono at this point.
“Since we’re not operating in the black yet, everyone so far has graciously offered to contribute for by-lines alone, which is how it will remain for the near term. So unfortunately, not very good news for the freelancer pool out there.”
