The Atlantic Celebrates Brave Thinkers With Lt. Dan Choi

Last night, The Atlantic celebrated its “Brave Thinkers” issues by hosting a discussion at “The Atlantic Loft” with one of the very brave thinking individuals who made this year’s list — Lt. Daniel Choi, the former infantry officer who came out as gay very publicly on Rachel Maddow’s show and consequently became the face of the movement to do away with the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

Those invited to the discussion — including several gay, lesbian and transgender former officers — gathered around, nibbling what seemed like limitless bowls of samosas, to hear Choi talk about his childhood; his struggles with being gay in a conservative religious household and, later, at West Point; and how be came about his decision to come out publicly.

In his characteristically frank and outspoken manner, Choi advised all those in attendance to not just “rock the vote,” as many celebrities have yelled at us to, but to “fuck the vote” and hold our elected representatives accountable even after the election process.
