NBC Uni Buys Oxygen For $925 Million

In the end NBC Universal’s $925 million purchase of Oxygen wasn’t quite ”BET money.” It wasn’t even the $1.5 billion that was speculated about by analysts. Still, the deal gives Jeff Zucker further access to ”the advertiser-coveted young, upscale, female demographic.”

Deal buzz had been speculated among the chattering classes since August, when The Hollywood Reporter reported that Oxygen had been shopping itself to NBC Universal. Oxygen — on the face of things — is an organic match with iVillage, the thus-far lackluster NBC property launched in 2000 was to be a multiplatform convergence of television and the web geared towards young women.
