One thousand exhibitors. One-hundred thousand visitors. PRINT 01 is a prepress, printing and converting show to be held September in Chicago. In anticipation of the event, the organizers of PRINT 01 provided PrintMedia InBox with a list of highlights designed to polish productivity and save costs in shorter time. The following companies and products will be showcased:Short-run finishingStandard Finishing Systems focuses on short-run, quick changeovers to automate binderies. The company will highlight a new 15-clamp perfect binder with in-line, three-knife trimming. Mark Hunt, director of marketing for Standard Finishing, which also distributes products from Horizon International and Hunkeler, says, "As you move into the higher-speed ranges, you get into fairly considerable set-up and changeover times from one end of the line to the other. Horizon International has made enormous advances in automating those processes to enable high-volume production with very short changeovers."Horizon's goal is to compress set-up times down to absolute minimums, using stepper motors and operator interfaces with touch-screen consoles. Hunt reports that a 1,500-per-hour workflow is upgraded to a 5,000 books-per-hour range with the system. Short-run case bindingThe short-run, on-demand trend is quickly growing in popularity within the book production market, but while there have been cost effective solutions for softcover-binding, the ability to achieve quality binding on short-runs has often been cost-prohibitive. As a result, bielomatik will feature its Bookmaster 360 to automatically case bind on-demand books. Bill English, vice president of the paper division for bielomatik, says the Bookmaster 360 case binds rapidly without adjustment or set-up time for formats between 250mm x 320mm and 105mm x 148mm with spine heights of 6mm to 60mm. "When a book comes off a digital or direct imaging press," explains English, "we can do production case binding in 10 seconds. Down the road, we will be adding modules to make cases and do embossing."The company will also demonstrate a modular off-line web finishing system, P2000, to print everything from upside-down, inside-out, back-to-front, personalized, remoistened returned, special featured, digitally printed and perforated inline forms. English is especially confident that "smart" labels and tags will create a production trend. The underlying technology uses RFID (radio frequency identification), which allows intelligent labels to be embedded with transponder inlays. English says collateral benefiting from the process includes admission tickets, transit tags, library books and airline passes. Total Postpress SolutionsTotal Postpress productivity is expanding. In response, Heidelberg will present a focus on postpress solutions. Its total workflow solution will be feature cutters, folders and final-stitched products. Other products demonstrated by Heidelberg will include POLAR cutting equipment, System 6, System 3 and DC10 label-cutting system to produce square- or die-cut labels. "We are finding postpress solutions to be very important to our customers," admits Larry Tanowitz, vice president of postpress marketing at Heidelberg. "Since most of the value of a job has already been applied before reaching postpress, any mistakes (spoilage) in this area are the most expensive. A printed piece may be the most beautiful print job you have ever seen, but if it is cut crooked or folded wrong, it's a piece of junk."Productivity boosts in laminationSpeed and productivity are concerns for D&K, a company that will showcase its latest laminating equipment. Three models will be featured: Double Kote High Speed, System 3210 and wide-format Expression. "The NT roller (featured in System 3210) offers many advantages, including consistent quality of lamination, the ability to run a true temperature, maintenance-free operation, durability and reliability," says Holli DeLong, marketing communications coordinator for D&K. "Plants can expect to achieve true production speeds up to 100 fpm with this machine," she adds.Bringing it in-houseAlthough it caters to both commercial printing and converting markets, Brandtjen & Kluge reports an increasing number of commercial printers bridge binding and finishing in-house. "Commercial printers are seeing the margins of their core products decreasing, so they are looking to add value to those products," says Michael Aumann, director of sales and marketing. "This usually means doing some of the finishing operations in-house."The company will show products in several categories. Its latest foil delivery system utilizes a unit that offers precise foil registration, resulting is less waste and lower supply costs. Brandtjen & Kluge's gluing machine also provide new feeding capabilities. "With these new capabilities, the operator can either vacuum pile-feed or bottom-feed with friction feeder," explains Aumann. "These features will be available on our UniFold and FlexFold machines."Turbo-charge itRollem Corporation will show a wide variety of custom and specialty equipment for scoring, perforating and slitting/collating applications, including Champion Turbo Airfeed, TR Die-Score System and Slipstream playing card two-directional card slitter-collator. Designed for finishing stock from digital presses, Champion Turbo Airfeed prevents cracking or marking. It's suited to short-runs and is equipped with adjustable heads.
