LOS ANGELES–Sixteen Western agencies have been named finalists in the 1997 national Effie awards.

Sponsored by the New York American Marketing Association, the Effie awards recognize the results and effectiveness of advertising.

Los Angeles finalists include BBDO West, nominated for two campaigns for Apple Computer, Campbell-Ewald, for two DirecTV spots; D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, for a Baskin-Robbins International ad; Grey’s Los Angeles office, for a Kal Kan Foods spot; and McCann-Erickson, for Cathay Pacific Airways work.

Rubin Postaer and Associates in Santa Monica, Calif., was nominated for an am/pm Mini Markets spot; Suissa Miller in Santa Monica, for SkyTel and Beech Nut Nutrition work and TBWA Chiat/Day’s Venice, Calif., office for Sony Computer Entertainment of America.

Finalists in San Francisco include Citron Haligman Bedecarre, nominated for an ad for the San Francisco Opera and Foote, Cone & Belding, cited for an Ore-Ida Foods spot. McCann-Erickson was recognized for its work for the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., the California Milk Advisory Board and the San Jose Mercury News; Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, for Anheuser-Busch and Sutter Home Winery work; and J. Walter Thompson, for ads for Sprint and the California Lottery.

The finalists will not know if they have won a gold, silver or bronze award or the top prize, the Grand Effie, until the June 4 awards show in New York. Campaigns are judged in 42 categories by 125 senior advertising and marketing executives. More than 25 percent of this year’s finalists are small to mid-sized agencies.
