It didn’t make Cronkite’s evening broadcast, but in 1962 the dog food industry was undergoing a revolution. Prior to that time, Americans didn’t have many choices when it came to feeding Rover. Milk-Bone dog biscuits had been around since 1908 (they weren’t just shaped like bones; they were as dry as them too). Then, in 1922, Ken-L Ration introduced the world’s first canned dog food. Despite the disturbing fact that the stuff was horse meat, it wolfed down 90 percent market share by 1941.
