New Yorker Leads Ellies Noms With 10

The New Yorker once again led the list of finalists for the American Society of Magazine Editors’ prestigious National Magazine Awards, which were announced today. The Condé Nast literary title got 10 nominations, including General Excellence in the 1 million- to 2 million-circ category; Reporting; and Feature Writing. While the New Yorker has received more awards (47) than any other magazine, nominations don’t always translate into wins, as evidenced by 2007 when the title got 12 nominations but won none. GQ, also owned by Condé, was the second-most nominated with eight noms (two for Reporting), the most ever for GQ in a single year, according to ASME. New York magazine, another perennial ASME favorite, also received multiple nominations (six), including General Excellence in the 250,000- to 500,000-circ category; Single-Topic Issue; and Design.For the complete list of finalists, go to MPA's Web site.Most of the finalists getting more than one nomination were the usual suspects, including Esquire (five), National Geographic (five), Backpacker (four), Bon Appétit (four), The New York Times Magazine (four) and Wired (four). Time, Newsweek, The Atlantic and Harper’s got three apiece. First-time finalists included Automobile, Salon.com and The Antioch Review. Submissions were down 13 percent this year, a time when publishing companies are looking to cut costs wherever possible, including contest fees (ASME charges $250 for members, $450 for non-members). This year, ASME received 1,707 submissions, down from 1,964 in 2008 and 1,774 in 2007. In perhaps another sign of the depressed economic times, content related to food and health/fitness scored high with judges this year. Food-related content received 12 nominations and health/fitness, 11. The 26 winners of the so-called Ellies, named for the Alexander Calder stabile elephant that represents the award, will be announced April 30 at a ceremony at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center.
