Former Playboy Enterprises Chief Content Officer Cory Jones Joins Canadian Cannabis Content Hub Civilized

"Cannabis continues to push our collective cultural and political attitudes forward on a daily basis."

We’ve all seen them. Those cheeky pop-up overlays on home pages, urging visitors to sign up for a website’s newsletter. But how many of these riff on a sitting U.S. Attorney General?

The Sessions pop-up at civilized.life was the brainchild of Cory Jones, who started working with the site last fall as a content consultant. As you might imagine, on a platform serving the casual cannabis user, the campaign drove a lot of newsletter signups.

Jones also helped grow the website’s monthly traffic past one million unique visitors and has now joined the company full-time as chief content officer. Jones held the same role at Playboy Enterprises from 2014 to 2016 and has also worked on the digital side with Maxim magazine and served as managing editor of Break Media’s holytaco.com.

Civilized is based in Saint John, New Brunswick with offices in Toronto and Venice, Calif. Jones (pictured) will be based in California.

The company raised $1.3 million Canadian in 2015 from angel investors, including investment from co-founders Derek and Terri MacDonald Riedle. It has followed this year with a $3 million U.S. Series A push, led by famed concert promoter and former Live Nation chairman Michael Cohl. Cohl sits on the Board of Directors with the Riedle’s and Mitchell Fox, a former publisher of Details and Vanity Fair and one-time CEO of The Golf Digest Companies.
