The Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP) awarded John Rennie, editor of Scientific American magazine, the Sagan Award for Public Understanding of Sciences. First awarded in 1993, the purpose of the award is to honor widely recognized proponents towards the understanding of science. Past winners have included Carl Sagan and Alan Alda.

Rennie is the seventh editor in the 155-year history of Scientific American. Since his appointment in 1994, he has shared intellectual adventure, fun and the beauty of science through expert accounts and features.
