Unemployed Man Robs Former Employer to Convince Family He’s Still Employed

Wait, what?

No worries — we had to read the headline twice, too. Martyn Goddard, a discount worker, lost his job. Instead of telling his family, he robbed the store that laid him off to get some cash as faux income! He wanted to convince his family he was still working.

According to The Telegraph, the prosecuting attorney explained, “His wife had been badgering him for a couple weeks as to why he had no money. He spent the previous evening at her house and said that he was going to see his employer about wages owed to him.”

In order to literally show his wife that he was still working at the store in northern England, he whipped out a knife and demanded to see the safe. Keep in mind he robbed his co-workers; his voice was enraged in order to disguise it. As for the loot, he walked away with 9,00o pounds (equivalent to about $14,150).

So, not only did he rob his former employer, he proceeded to lie to his wife. He gave her 200 pounds and mentioned it was back pay. Next up, he spent 90 pounds to book a party for his son.

In court, Goddard confessed to the robbery and got sentenced to four years in jail. According to the piece, the judge told the man, “Plenty of people get their lives in a mess one way or another. What you did was completely disproportionate to the situation you found yourself in.”
