The Huffington Post just scooped up two former executive editors and an award-winning reporter from the sinking ship that is The New Republic.
Rachel Morris and Greg Veis, former TNR editors, and reporter Jonathan Cohn will assist The Huffington Post in expanding its focus on long-form and investigative journalism, Arianna Huffington said in a staff memo obtained by FishbowlDC.
“Rachel and Greg are the kind of editors every reporter dreams of writing for,” Huffington wrote, adding “there’s more good news: we’ll also be joined by Jonathan Cohn, one of the country’s most respected reporters, and a former colleague of Rachel and Greg’s at The New Republic.”
The three former TNR staffers were part of a massive wave of journalists who left the magazine at the end of the year as a result of disagreements with TNR‘s new leadership. The mass exodus began in the wake of the resignation of editor, Franklin Foer and literary editor, Leon Wieseltier, who had ongoing disagreements with TNR‘s new owner, Chris Hughes, over the direction of the magazine’s future. After the two editors submitted their resignations, dozens of reporters and editors followed suit — forcing the magazine to cancel its January issue.
