That Was Fast: New Owner of 11 British Columbia Paper Is Closing Five

Black Press, which bought eleven papers in British Columbia from Glacier Media last week, is closing five of them, including two papers more than a hundred years old, Editor & Publisher reports.

These are smaller papers, so only about 40 people will lose their jobs, Black Press COO Rick O’Connor estimated.

O’Connor told Business in Victoria that some of the papers that are being closed were unprofitable but were part of the package deal: It was like, ‘If you’re buying the Trail paper, then you’ve got to take the Nelson paper as well even though it’s losing a lot of money.'”

Just last week, O’Connor was keeping mum on whether Black Press planned to close any papers.
