Porn Industry Against Replacing .com With .xxx

Today could be a historical one for internet porn.

The masters of the interwebs, a.k.a. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), are considering adding a new domain for pornographic websites. At ICANN’s public meeting in San Francisco today the organization’s board will be voting on the creation of the .xxx domain.

While it certainly would make smut easier to identify, the adult industry seems pretty dead set against the change. The central objections are:

  1. The new .xxx domain would be a major hassle and likely cost porn companies millions of dollars.
  2. The domain would make adult sites easier to censor, again likely costing porn companies millions of dollars.

“Free speech,” it seems, is quite profitable.

Anti-porn groups aren’t too happy about the idea either. They’re convinced it will lead to even more cyber smut. The ICANN board is largely expected to approve the .xxx domain today, but we’ll keep you posted.
