Politico Names Joe Schatz to Lead States as It Reorganizes Its States Operation

Capital New York founders Josh Benson and Tom McGeveran are out.

Amidst an announced reorganization of its states operation that includes the departure of Politico New York née Capital New York founders Josh Benson and Tom McGeveran, Joe Schatz has been named to lead Politico’s states coverage.

“[Schatz has] been indispensable in helping frame the company’s choices on states,” wrote editor in chief John Harris in a note to staff. “He will have his own style and priorities in leading states, but in all essential respects he shares the values of Josh and Tom. These include unshakeable integrity and sense of fairness, a full commitment to POLITICO and its ambitions, a fierce commitment to creating a winning newsroom and winning business, and a deep conviction about the role of journalists in our communities and the world.” Schatz had been editor of the Politico Europe brief.

While concurrently acknowledging that Benson and McGeveran “recruited some of the best journalists in the country” and “worked with business colleagues to steadily grow states revenue, including 82 percent year-over-year growth in 2016,” Harris wrote that the emergence of states from its “start-up phase” required a new approach.

That approach includes changing states’ center of gravity from New York to Politico’s headquarters in Rossyln, including the entire production desk, for which “the immensely skilled colleagues on our New York production team will be invited to apply for several open positions.”
