Politico Hires Editor From The Atlantic

A piece of news that may make some over at The Atlantic gag (get it?): Politico‘s Magazine has hired Geoffrey Gagnon as its editorial director. Gagnon was a senior editor at The Atlantic. Before that he was articles editor at Boston magazine.

He starts Sept. 23.

The door swings both ways. National Journal, owned by the same publisher as The Atlantic, recently promoted Tim Grieve to Editor-in-Chief. Grieve is a former Politico editor.

CORRECTION: The previous picture we ran of Gagnon was — gasp! — not him. Internet searches proved to be faulty and we promise to be more careful in the future. The guy who we thought he was looks quite a bit different — check him out after the jump.

We’re delighted to announce a key new member of the POLITICO Magazine team: Geoffrey Gagnon, who joins us as the magazine’s editorial director. Geoff, a senior editor at The Atlantic for the last few years who most recently helped them launch the new Atlantic Weekly tablet edition, is a perfect fit for our new project, a true writer’s editor with an entrepreneurial streak too. A graduate of the University of Michigan and native of Traverse City, he was articles editor at Boston magazine before The  Atlantic and is also a veteran of the terrific if short-lived startup out of New Haven, Legal Affairs magazine. He’ll start Monday, September 23 — just in time, given the magazine’s ambitious fall launch plans (about which more soon!). Geoff rounds out a great editorial team now in place: there’s creative director Janet Michaud, who joined us from the Washington Post, where she was the newspaper’s chief art director; senior editor Denise Kersten Wills, who came to us from Washingtonian, where she was features editor; associate editor Margy Slattery, a fellow FP alum who was assistant managing editor there; and researcher Elizabeth Ralph. Many thanks for all the help from what seems like a cast of thousands of POLITICOs… and we hope you’ll all get a chance to say hi to the new magaziners as they settle in here in the newsroom.
