Northstar Travel Media Buys Nielsen’s Travel Group Brands

successful_meetings_cover_3.1.10.jpgToday, New Jersey-based Northstar Travel Media successfully acquired Nielsen’s Travel Group Brands, including Successful Meetings, Business Travel News, Meeting News, Incentive and MiMegasite – a portal for hosting online meetings. Northstar already owned such travel and business travel-specific brands as Family Getaways, Travel Weekly, TravelAge West, Meetings & Conventions, and the Hotel & Travel Index.

Northstar CEO Tom Kemp says the company will continue to run their newly-acquired magazines in print form “at least in the short term” until each media brand is properly and adequately evaluated.

As for layoffs? Kemp admits that, while the move may result in the elimination of certain staff members, the brands will — eventually — “see an expansion in headcount across business functions.”

Just last week, Nielsen Business Media sold eight media/entertainment brands to e5 Global Media for $84 million (adding up to a loss of $14 million for the company) and was said to be “shopping” its travel group to different companies, Northstar being among them.
