Miley Cyrus vs. Sinéad O’Connor Escalates

From an open letter… to legal threats?

When the 20-year-old version of Miley Cyrus is involved, apparently anything is possible. Billboard reports that Sinéad O’Connor is none too pleased with Cyrus’ insulting, derogatory Twitter reaction to her showbiz advice. So much so that via follow-up open letter, the Irish singer is threatening to take the twerk girl to court over a mocking image-grab of some ancient O’Connor tweets:

“Have you no sense of danger at all? Or responsibility? Remove your tweets immediately or you will hear from my lawyers,” she warns. “Mockery causes deaths. Period. It is an unacceptable form of bullying, no matter who it is doing the bullying.”

The good news here is that the pot stirred by Cyrus and O’Connor is sparking serious debate of another serious issue: the “slut-shaming” of young women for presenting themselves in the media exactly the way they are encouraged and expected to.

With Cyrus hosting this weekend’s Saturday Night Live, there could be a reference or two to this from 30 Rock. It also seems likely that Cyrus will, one out of rehearsals, delete the tweet in question.

Update (7:00 p.m.):
O’Connor posted a third open letter to Cyrus on Facebook late last night, reacting to a pair of subsequent tweets from Cyrus suggesting a possible meeting. A brief excerpt:

I have no interest whatsoever in meeting you… You can take five minutes today between G-string fuckin’ changes to publicly apologize and remove your abusive tweets. If you do not then you don’t give a shit who you mock and what damage you do by being so ignorant.

And of course, there are the inevitable YouTube takes on all this. None of which will likely compare to this stupendous Robin SkouterisPanos T remix:
