Good Magazine to Launch LA-Focused ‘Local’ Project

Yesterday, we broke the news about how Good is launching its own in-house advertising company to complement its media operations. Well, that isn’t all that folks are up to over there. During a lengthy visit to Good‘s offices last week, we spoke with LA-editor Alissa Walker and Mark Barker–who was just hired to manage yet another new company endeavor called “Good Local.”

Unlike a traditional media rollout, with a total reliance on editorial content, Good Local will combine reporting, event planning, social activism and philanthropy. “Good‘s mission has become more action-oriented,” says Walker. “We don’t just want to bring attention to problems through reporting. We want to actively encourage our community to become part of the solution.”

Walker cites a project Good recently undertook in conjunction with LAUSD–who wanted to build green community gardens on the grounds of several of its schools, but lacked adequate funds. Good held an online competition, crowdsourced the designs, and organized volunteers to help build the winning design on an LAUSD campus.

Since Good is based in Los Angeles, “Local” means that the entire project will be rooted here in LA. Best part: they’re looking for freelancers.

“I’m always looking for ideas on how we can cover LA better,” says Walker. “As a white girl living in Silverlake, it’s a challenge trying to capture all of the city’s diversity. Anyone who can help us do that we’d love to speak with.”

And unlike most work on the web, “We pay money,” she says. “Actual money.”

Good will be spotlighting its new LA-focus in the upcoming issue of the magazine this April. Should the project succeed here, Good expects to roll out more “Local” experiments in cities across the country. In the meanwhile, Good Local is “gearing up editorially” here in LA and should be making multiple hires in the coming months is looking for freelancers. Good Local currently isn’t looking for staffers, but Good itself should be making multiple editorial hires in the coming months.
