Gawker Hires New Head of Sales From Condé Nast

Andrew Gorenstein will start in mid-July

Gawker Media has hired Andrew Gorenstein, currently senior executive director of digital sales at Condé Nast, as its new chief advertising officer, according to an internal Gawker email.

Gorenstein has been at Condé Nast since 2007, first as a sales director at, then as a national sales director for the digital business group. He became executive director of digital sales in 2009 and senior executive director in 2010.

In an email to the Gawker sales team, founder Nick Denton wrote, “Back in the early days, I used to joke that Gawker Media should aim to be the Condé Nast of online media, a portfolio of titles with distinct and compelling editorial characters…

“But it's Condé Nast's slick and powerful advertising sales machine that we've always been most jealous of. So it's particularly appropriate that we're hiring Andrew Gorenstein, senior executive director for Digital Sales at 4 Times Square. Andrew's been at Condé for four years—but he's always been on the digital side. This is no print advertising dinosaur. He will run Gawker's sales and marketing department, build out our national sales force, and be part of the senior management team.”

In the email, Denton also noted that his company's ad sales for the first half of 2011 are up 35 percent over 2010, that ComScore showed Gawker’s US audience to have bounced back to 16.8m in May (from 14.3m in April), and hinted at a forthcoming change to Gawker’s design after a redesign that has been heavily criticized.

“Pageviews per visitor are up significantly," Denton wrote. "And the next iteration of the design should cement the recovery.”
