FDA Turns to SkyDoesMinecraft to Create Anti-Smoking PSA

YouTube content creator recently reached 2.1 billion views

When 21-year-old Adam Dahlberg—best known as SkyDoesMinecraft—announced to his parents he was quitting his day job at Subway to pursue creating YouTube videos about the game Minecraft, they were a bit skeptical about his plans. But, more than 2.1 billion views and 10.3 million subscribers later, he's gained their approval—as well as deals with Ubisoft, Tontino's and now, the FDA.

"When I originally started doing what I do, they were not as enthusiastic about what I did," he recalled, laughing. "They said, 'Are you sure about this? Are you sure it's not a scam making money from the computer?'"

Dahlberg is currently working on an anti-smoking PSA for the FDA, who reached out to his multi-channel network Machinima for YouTube content creators that would be interested in the campaign. While he himself isn't a smoker, having family members who were, greatly affected his life, and he'll be vlogging about his experience. The FDA has been on a push to encourage teens not to begin smoking, including The Real Cost campaign that began in February.

Though he initially started posting videos about Runescape and World of Warcraft, the YouTube content creator switched to the sandbox-type game in 2011 after his friends became hooked. He especially enjoyed that he had free reign to go anywhere and create anything his mind could think of.

"It's so community driven, unlike a lot of video games that rely on gameplay and the aspects of being better than other people," he explained. "It leaves a lot for creativity."

Since it became his full-time job a year ago, Dahlberg spends three to four hours a day playing the game for filming purposes, admittedly mostly searching for new ways to keep his audience interested. The rest of his time is spent editing and doing additional deals. However, one of the things he's most proud of doing is working with the Make-A-Wish foundation to spend a day with a fan at ArcadiaCon. "I never thought that someone would think of me as someone they'd want to do anything with," he said proudly.
